Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers. — Isaac Asimov
When I was younger, I used to write whenever I was emotionally disturbed or feeling down. I suppose there’s something about being upset that makes us more reflective. I kept diaries, though I wasn’t very regular with them. Sometimes I tried my hand at poetry, other times I wrote quotes of my own. I believe my love for writing was closely linked to my passion for reading, but I tried to keep my writings as original as possible.
Back in school, I was a bit of a lone wolf. I had good friends, but I didn’t hang out with them much. My best companion was books. I read voraciously. I loved diving into the stories, or more accurately, into the author’s imaginary world. There were countless days when I was so consumed by a book that I skipped everything—meals, showers—losing all sense of time. Sometimes, I’d even read storybooks before an important exam, instead of revising my notes. I would save up my pocket money and spend most of it on books. To be honest, my mother wasn’t always happy when she found out about my obsession. 😉 But what can I say? It was worth it. And I believe every bookworm will agree with me. 😊
I spent my entire childhood in an environment in which the mighty of the earth had no place outside storybooks and dreams. — Halldór Laxness
Let’s get back to writing. All the books I’ve read—whether detective, action, thriller, or a thoughtful biography—have inspired me to see life from different perspectives. They have made me realize how powerful a pen (or a keyboard) can be. I’ve traveled to different countries, to the vast reaches of space and the deep oceans, to the past and the future—all as a companion to the authors. That’s the power of a writer: they can take you to places you’ve never imagined, show you realities you never thought of. This ability has always driven me to try writing myself.
As I mentioned earlier, I tried to write sometimes, but I never really finished anything. Life tends to get busy when you’re caught up in grades and results. But I want to write again. Last year, I started a blog with a friend, where we shared topics related to engineering and technology. The idea was to make technical knowledge accessible to others in an easy and understandable way. But as much as I enjoyed that, I couldn’t fully explore or improve my creative writing abilities with topics like that. That’s when I came across Blogging University and its courses on Writing and Blogging. I was really impressed by the materials they offered, and I thought, why not give it a try?
Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go. — E. L. Doctorow
In every creative pursuit, perfection comes with iteration, and writing is no different. So I’ll keep trying to put my thoughts into words, refining and giving them meaning. Perhaps, if I keep writing for another two or three years, and someone asks me why I write, I might have a different answer. But today, I’m writing because I want to become better at it. I want to give words to my imagination and create a world with those words. I want to…—I just want to write.
The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe. — Gustave Flaubert

I always loved the title of Anthony Powell’s book, #10 in his 12 piece masterpiece, ‘A Dance to the Music of Time’. It was ‘Books Do Furnish a Room’ because it’s true, you’re never alone with a book and reading inspires writing. Personally, I’ve always compared writing to breathing, an essential activity I can’t question, however difficult sometimes. Nice blog and kudos to Suze (http://suziland.net/2017/04/april-z-challenge-x-amples-posts/) for making the connection.
Asimov.. The greatest of them all 🙂
Absolutely. What’s your favorite Asimov book? 🙂
That’s kind of hard to tell.. for anything up to Golan Trevize is just smoking! And I even find his nonfiction ones quite enjoyable 🙂
I wish I could say that I am a big reader. I really started blogging in 2011 when I moved from Canada to Italy. Gave it up for a while and started again when my daughter was born. I’m not as consistant as I would like to be and I would say that well, I’m just really opinionated and sometimes need somewhere to vent 😛
Hello Doug! I’m not much of a reader these days as well. Neither am I a consistent blogger. However lately I’m feeling that I definitely should make some time to read new books as well as vent sometimes by writing. These can be really helpful to recharge one 🙂
Love this…

I feel the same way about reading, I left it alone for a lot of years but when I picked it back up it was magical 😊👍
Thanks!
It’s great to know that you feel the same way about reading 🙂
About leaving books, it happened to me as well, once I got busy with college and stuff. But I still feel the same way about books. And yeah, it’s magical 😀
👍
I think we all started writing due to a passion for reading. Eventually, we started blogging to vent and be heard at the same time.
Yeah. I’m realizing that after reading many other #everydayinspiration “I write because…” blog posts.. Thanks for sharing your opinion 🙂
I’m glad that you liked it 🙂
And I’m a great fan of Asimov, so thanks for loving that 🙂
